How to Choose a KVM Switch

A KVM switch lets one keyboard, video display and mouse control several computers. The hard part is not understanding what it does, it is choosing between dozens of models that look similar. Work through these questions in order and the list gets short quickly.

1. How many computers?

Count the computers you need today and add room for growth. Switches usually come in 2, 4, 8 and 16 port versions. For a desk, 2 or 4 ports is typical. For a server rack, 8 or 16 ports with an on-screen menu makes finding the right machine much easier.

2. How many monitors per computer?

If each computer drives two screens, you need a dual-monitor (dual-head) KVM, so both displays switch together. A single-monitor switch cannot do this, even with an extra cable.

3. Which video interface?

Match the switch to what your computers output: VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C. Adapters can work, but they add a failure point and can interfere with EDID and resolution handling. If you mix interfaces, ask us about the best approach.

4. What resolution and refresh rate?

Check the maximum resolution of the switch against your monitors. For 4K screens, look closely at the refresh rate and chroma figures: 4K at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 chroma is noticeably sharper for text than 4K at 30 Hz or 4:2:0.

5. What else needs to switch?

  • USB devices: keyboard and mouse only, or also storage, webcams and printers? For fast storage, choose USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) sharing.
  • Audio: analog speaker and microphone switching is built into many models.
  • Control: front-panel buttons, keyboard hotkeys, an on-screen menu, or RS-232 / IR control from a room system.
